I was having lunch with my husband the other day and I shared with him that I was looking for a good do-it-yourself face mask for the summer. He looked at me puzzled and asked “Face mask, why? Don’t you already have perfectly good ones that you can wear when you go outside?” I immediately started laughing. Clearly, these days you can’t use the phrase “face mask” without people immediately thinking COVID-19. So, here, I’d like to reclaim the phrase and offer you a couple of do-it-yourself facial treatments for the summer, using one of the best summer fruits out there: watermelon. These masks are quick and easy to make and are a perfect way to replenish your skin after a hot summer day. They are also an excellent way to relax your mind and prepare yourself for a good night sleep.
Mask 1: Watermelon, lemon juice, and honey mask
1. Preparation: Take ½ a cup of watermelon cubes and juice them in a blender or use a fork to mash them into a paste. From that mixture, take 2 tablespoons of watermelon juice and combine them with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, and 1 tablespoon of honey in a small bowl. Mix well. Don’t discard the leftover paste, you can drink it as is, add it to a smoothie, or freeze for later use
2. Application: Apply mixture on face and neck and let rest for 10-15 minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water
3. Benefits: The lemon helps exfoliates dry skin and the watermelon and honey help hydrate the remaining skin cells
Mask 2: Watermelon and yogurt mask
1. Preparation: Take 1 cup of watermelon cubes and juice them in a blender or use a fork to mash them into a paste. From that mixture, take ½ a cup of watermelon juice and combine it with 1 tablespoon of yogurt in a small bowl. Mix well. Again, don’t discard the leftover paste, you can drink it as is, add it to a smoothie, or freeze it for later use
2. Application: Apply mixture on face and neck and let rest for 20 minutes. Rinse off with cold water
3. Benefits: Mask will leave your skin supple, and repeated use will rejuvenate your skin
